President Trump has ordered 200 National Guard troops into Portland, Oregon, to protect federal facilities after weeks of unrest. The 60-day deployment faces fierce pushback, with Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield filing a federal lawsuit, citing violations of the Posse Comitatus Act. Governor Tina Kotek also argues the move escalates tensions and undermines state authority.
Meanwhile, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is requesting 1,000 National Guard troops to combat rising crime in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport, citing local police shortages.

#BREAKING Appeals court rules President Trump can send National Guard Troops into Portland#Oregon
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that President Donald Trump has the legal power to deploy National Guard troops to Portland to restore order and protect federal property.
The decision overturned a lower court's temporary block, and affirms thst the president is given the power in the constitution to address the violence in a city where local leadership has failed to do so.

The ruling comes as Portland continues to deal with ANTIFA riots and protests.
The 2-1 ruling immediately lifts U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut's ruling to keep the National Guard out of Portland, clearing the way for up to 2,000 Oregon National Guard troops to mobilize if ordered by Trump.

Judges cited the 2020 deployments during the George Floyd riots, saying that federal intervention is justified when local officials fail to control unrest, as evidenced by Portland's repeated declarations of riots and attacks on federal buildings.
Why Oregon re-criminalized drugs
This piece originally misstated that Multnomah County's deflection numbers reflected those of the entire state of Oregon. In 2020, Oregon became the first state in America to decriminalize all drugs. Was it a catastrophic mistake? Has this famously progressive city been mugged by reality? Reason visited Portland and talked to drug users, politicians, and police to find out what actually happened and uncovered a very different story. Portland isn't waiting for any changes to state drug laws to try its own sort of decriminalization. But to better emulate Portugal, it needs to establish a clearer pathway off the streets and into shelter. The circumstances that undermined the state's brief experiment with decriminalization have shifted in the city's favor. The fentanyl crisis is abating nationwide, overdoses and drug-related emergency calls are down, crime is falling, and the city's population just ticked back up. Portland can do more to clean up its public spaces and expand treatment, which would help to dispel the notion that decriminalization makes cities unlivable. The stakes are enormous. The half-century-long war on drugs has destroyed millions of lives. The lesson from Oregon and Portugal is that decriminalization can work, but only if you keep your city livable and safe for drug users and non-drug users alike.
