The tearing of the Temple curtain will remain for Christians a symbol of direct access to God, accomplished through Jesus’ death that takes away sin. The torn curtain also tells us that failure to repent brings consequences. This is something that should prompt us to keep thinking.

This hits close to home. How many times have we done the wrong thing, or didn’t bother to do the right thing, because doing the right thing would cost us? How many people have we hurt that way? In the Palm Sunday Gospel, we could easily say Pilate’s words as well as the mob’s.

The Jews demanded Jesus’s death and willingly took the blame. Bad, yes, but at least they believed something. At least they cared enough about the truth to fight for it. They cared so much about the things of God they risked their lives, because as they knew full well, the Romans could deal with mobs by killing them.

We shouldn’t be Pilate. We should be the Jews.

Imagine if blood donation was a prerequisite for going to the theatre. Imagine if you had to show your organ donor card in order to get into a restaurant. Imagine if you had to donate bone marrow before you could go to a football game. Imagine if you had to accept any socially beneficial medical intervention before you were entitled to chemotherapy on the NHS.
