What is Zionism:Zionism is a nationalist movement and ideology that seeks to establish a homeland for the Jewish people in Jerusalem with the creation of the State of Israel.
The word Zionism derives from Zion which means Jerusalem, the promised land of the Hebrew people according to the Christian Bible.
Zionism seeks to give a cultural unity to the Jewish people by establishing a national home for them in terms of race, religion, and culture. In this sense, Zionism is a religious, cultural and financial movement that supports the establishment of the Judaic religion, the Hebraic culture, and the building of a strong economy among and for the Jewish people.
As a political movement, Zionism emerged at the end of the 19th century thanks to the efforts of the Austro-Hungarian journalist Theodor Herzl (1860-1904). Concerned about the social problem that anti-Semitism was causing in Europe, he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897. In addition, he became the first president of the World Zionist Organization (OSM or WZO for its acronym in English).
