I make the thumbnails using
Libreoffice - presentation
Then i export it to PDF
then i screencap the PDF using screengab,
it saves it as PNG
Thats how ive been doing thumbnails for all the videos

Advantage of appimage I found is
- I control when it updates
- I can revert to older builds
- I have backups stored of older copies if required
- I can reinstall, recreate shortcunts and its 'installed'
- I can copy to USB, NAS, another computer without internet
